My whole family LOVES coffee. For my dad’s birthday last year, I bought him a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card, and showed him how to download the rewards app to his phone – let’s just say I beat my brothers out for the most used gift! Even my older brother and his wife are die-hard coffee drinkers. The last time we were all together, Tara, my sister in law, drove to Dunkin’ Donuts at 7am on a Saturday just to get some coffee. 7AM!
I, on the other hand, somehow made it through high school, college, a master’s degree and halfway through a PhD without becoming addicted to coffee. I do like to drink it every once in a while, but I definitely prefer mocha and caramel lattes that give a little more flavor while still getting the warm and invigorating benefits. So for this Thanksgiving, I came up with a homemade Caramel Mocha Latte recipe that I can quickly concoct so I can enjoy coffee alongside the rest of my family. After all, in African households, declining food or drink is like cursing someone out, and I’m tired of being side-eyed by my folks!
Homemade Caramel Mocha Latte Recipe
Dunkin’ Donuts Caramel Coffee Cake Flavored Coffee, which is available at Walmart
Instant Hot Cocoa Mix
Muslin Cloth/Handkerchief/Coffee filter (or coffee maker)
Hot water (duh!)
Walmart’s coffee aisle is stocked with several flavors of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, but I chose the Caramel Coffee Cake variety because I sometimes get caramel shots in my coffee drinks. Some stores carry the seasonal coffee varieties Pumpkin Spice and White Chocolate Peppermint, so I’m hoping I can try those soon!
Since I don’t have a coffee maker, I brewed the Caramel Coffee Cake coffee (this is a mouthful) using the old school pour over/drip method (coffee aficionados, please let me know if there’s a difference between these). Place a clean muslin cloth, handkerchief, or coffee filter over your cup, then measure out a bit less than a tablespoon of the Dunkin’ Donuts Caramel Coffee Cake onto the cloth.
Take your boiling water and pour slowly over the coffee grounds, just wetting them a bit. Then, in slow successions, pour a little water over the grounds, wait until it soaks and drips through, and repeat. I poured out about 10 times, so slow and steady wins the race here as pouring too quickly will result in weak coffee. And the point isn’t to have weak coffee, it’s to have coffee that tastes good!
Once all the water has been poured, carefully remove your cloth and immediately stir in instant hot cocoa mix, which is what we’re using for the mocha flavor. The packet I used is milk chocolate flavored with marshmallows, because I’m really just a big kid in an adult body (aka a millennial). If you have room and want to cut the coffee flavor a bit more, add a bit of warm milk (or even a creamy liqueur if ya need it, no judgement!). Since I didn’t steam my milk, technically this doesn’t count as a latte, but please don’t kill my vibe because I worked hard on this drink k?
I enjoyed my homemade Caramel Mocha Latte with some banana Nutella cookies (this recipe but substitute Nutella for chocolate chips) and added some leaf decorations that I also found at Walmart! Super cute if I do say so myself.
Looking forward to drinking this Caramel Mocha Latte throughout the rest of the fall – I have a coupon code so you can enjoy it too! Here’s a video of the whole process:
