Hello beauties I’m Shawn a 38 years young Maryland born wife, mother and the owner of Constant Covering, LLC a handmade pre-tied headwrap company.
How long have you been natural?
3 years, I did the big chop by completely cutting off all of my hair. I did not get a relaxer until I was in my early 20’s however, I was in a salon faithfully getting that press and curl since I was young. For a while I knew I wanted a change from my relaxed hair and my stylist at the time also did natural hair I thought “hey why not do it:..so I jumped right in!!
Tell us about your business.
I started Constant Covering in April of this year 2015. I make handmade pre-tied ready-to-wear satin lined headwraps. It actually came from a need, MY need. I always wore headwraps, on this particular morning I needed to rush and it took me longer than I wanted to, to tie the wrap. I called my sister and said, “I have an idea but I’ll need your help since I knew I needed a sewing machine and I’ve NEVER sewn a day in my life but she did. We played around with my personal scarfs but the concept just was not working. That night I prayed and I do mean prayed, when I returned back to the sewing machine I remembered a few tips my sister taught me and literally just like that, what was in my head was in front of me. I admit proudly that I cried like a baby at the sewing machine because I knew that this was a direct gift from God. I prayed again for my companies name – I wanted people to know what God is to me and at 3am that morning “Constant Covering” was born. A stylish trendy design on the outside while lined with satin to protect the tresses headwrap.
Where do you find inspiration?
I would consider myself a simplistic fashionista – I like to keep things simple so when I see a mom-on-the-go, I check out her clothes and possibly what she is doing (shopping, sports, errands, work, etc.). I notice her outfit is black however, she is wearing a pop of color shoes… so she would love a chic pop of color headwrap. I’m also inspired by 2-n-1 deals and my headwear allows multiple use daily.
What is your favorite line in the collection?
My headwraps are named after my family and I would have to say “LaShawn” a black and white chevron designed headwrap. My cousin LaShawn unfortunately passed away at the beginning of this year but when I showed her that pattern she fell in love immediately and gave me sound business advice by telling me to keep chasing my dreams.
What is one piece of advice you have for other naturals who want to start their own businesses?
Make it and rock it!! If you believe in your brand you make “everyone” understand why they need “YOUR” product. Trust that God will put people in your corner that believe in you and your product.
